CHAPTER 19

A hand went over my mouth, pressing the jewels of my veil against my lips and chin. My heart knocked against my ribs as if someone were punching me from the inside. The rush of adrenaline had me kicking and shoving, trying to dislodge the hand so I could scream, but it was like fighting somebody made of granite.

“Shh.” My attacker pressed me against the door, closing it, and trapping me with his body. His chest pushed against mine as I waited for a dagger to twist its way into my belly. Maybe the queen had decided she didn’t want to bother with me, after all.

“I’m going to let you go. Please, don’t scream.”

Kalyll!

I froze.

Slowly, he released me. I blinked, eyes adjusting to the dim light coming through a curtained window.

“Prince Kalyll,” I said, deepening my voice, “what is the meaning of this?”

He reached out and, with one swift pull, yanked the veil off. My hands went up to cover my face, but it was a useless maneuver. If he’d gone this far, it meant he already knew who I was.

But how?

Even in the dim light, the hurt and confusion were plain on his face. “I can ask you the same question.”

I shook my head at a loss for words.

“Why this charade? Why would you try to deceive me like this?”

“You’re assuming too much.”

“All I know is that you’re trying to pass yourself as someone else, and for whatever reason, you’re lying to me. I have never lied to you, Daniella. I’ve always been—”

“I did try to tell you, Kalyll. You just don’t remember.”

He narrowed his eyes, his expression growing pinched as if a memory were trying to force itself into the foreground. He whirled, stomped to the window, and threw the curtains open, allowing the afternoon sun to spill in. Under this new light, he scrutinized my face, spending too much time on my pointed ears.

“What is happening? Why would you do this?” He gestured toward my new features, his mouth twisted to one side.

“I didn’t do it. It was done to me.”

“Who would dare? I’ll kill them.” His hand went to the dagger strapped to his side.

“You did.”

“What are you…?” His mouth opened and closed, and at last, understanding dawned on him. “It’s the darkness still left in me, isn’t it?” He placed a hand over his heart.

I nodded, my heart hurting at the expression of complete defeat etched on his features.

He collapsed on a long bench situated right under the window and buried his face in his large hands. I just stood there, unsure of what to do, scared of what might be going through his head, wondering how long it would take for Wölfe to reappear and erase the knowledge Kalyll had just acquired.

After a heavy moment, Kalyll stood, took three long steps, and wrapped me in his arms, surprising me, and taking my breath away.

He inhaled my scent. “I have missed you. Every day, I longed to see you, to hold you like this.”
